MEL STONIER - SENIOR MARKETING MANAGER, UK AND IRELAND
A chartered marketer with a career that spans 12 years, Mel Stonier joined Expedia in October 2010 as Senior Marketing Manager for UK and Ireland. Her responsibilities include defining, developing and executing marketing plans for Expedia.co.uk and Expedia.ie.
Reporting directly to Andrew Warner, senior marketing director for Expedia EMEA, her key objective is to build brand health in the UK and manage the brand launch of Expedia in Ireland.
Prior to joining Expedia, Mel was the senior manager of communications planning at Barclaycard UK where she was responsible for integrated marketing development. Previously, she has also been responsible for increasing brand awareness at Mazda Motors UK and Visit Kent. She has a wealth of experience across four different industries in strategic and tactical marketing as well as team and agency management.
Mel started out in the travel industry, working for Holiday Extras, following completion of her degree in Business Studies from the University of Kent at Canterbury. She is married and lives with her husband, his three children and her two beloved Basset Hounds. In her spare time, she enjoys going to the cinema and watching live comedy.
My best trip
I love far flung destinations which offer diverse cultural experiences the more different to home, the better. My key criteria are generally: great weather, fantastic food, friendly people and plenty of culture and history.
My best trip was to Mahe, The Seychelles. I got married there in early 2010 in the Banyan Tree Spa on Intendance Bay – it was absolutely divine: tropical heaven on earth! Spectacular views of the Indian Ocean, one of the world's most beautiful beaches, palm trees and lush tropical forest: it really was paradise found. I also loved the Sechellois culture with an eclectic mix of races, cultures and religions contributing to a vibrant way of life.
My top travel tips
- Always take plenty of mosquito spray, insect repellent & sun cream. On a recent trip to Egypt I paid £20 for a £4 can of mosquito spray.
- Don’t get caught out with excess baggage fees – read the ‘airline baggage fees’ guidance and stick within size, weight & quantity limitation.
- Buy a bright coloured suitcase/ tie a bright colour scarf or fabric around handle of suitcase for quick & easy identification on the baggage reclaim conveyor belt.
- For damage limitation split up your valuables (bank & credit cards, cash etc) as much as possible in different pockets, bags and purses. This way if the worse happens, you haven’t lost/ had all resources stolen.
- Take a guided tour for an insight into local history & culture and to avoid missing key sites & attractions.
